2023 Season

2023 Season

Tom Garman18 Oct 2023 - 16:00

As the cold sets in we are reflecting on a difficult season with much change at the Field of Dreams.

The combination of losing a significant amount of the side who were promoted in 2022, injuries to key players, and a string of poor performances left us bottom of the 2nd Division in our first season back. Despite the struggles the atmosphere in the team remained strong and this will put us in good stead to bounce back. There were also plenty of positives during the season, no more such than Mali Bourdoille Lewis leading the batting lineup with real authority and class providing some much-needed runs for the side. He finished the year with 784 runs @ 46s with 4 fifties and 2 hundreds. We also saw great maturity with the ball from young Mohammad Ibrahim who took 21 wickets in his 16 games bowling some really difficult spells. We look forward to them both continuing to contribute next year as we look to bounce back and begin moving towards where we want to be again.

The loss of players in the 1st team understandably had a knock-on effect on the 2nd team who dealt with this incredibly well consistently picking up points and winning big games under the leadership of Sam Vernon who took to the role like a fish finger to water. A really strong end to the season saw the side finish 8th in a very strong division. A further positive to this season was the contribution of the juniors with Mushy Hussain and Zacki Butt regularly making contributions with the bat and Hassan Khan showing great skill with the ball.

It was another really positive season for our 3rd XI with a tough semi-final loss in the Chapel Cup and a 2nd placed finish in the league. A real team effort ensured 8 wins from 11 with plenty of a very impressive wins along the way. Big contributions again with the bat from youngsters Zacki, Ibby and Mushy were vital in this as well as Brian Defty taking 21 wickets at an average of 8.67. We thank Fav Butt for all his efforts in leading the side and hope that the positive performances continue and potentially we go a step further next year!

As a club, we thank all our volunteers and members for all their hard work throughout this season. It's been tough at times but people make Kirkstall and we're very lucky to have some great people around the club and are confident of 2024 being a really positive year for the club in which we can continue to build on the positives that have been building in recent years...
